Tijunca rainforest in Rio is the worlds largest "urban rainforest" covering some 32 km². The forest is a man-made reclamation of land around Rio de Janeiro that had previously been cleared and developed to grow sugar and coffee.

The number of homicides in Rio state was up 15 percent in the first four months of 2016 compared with last year. Around 85,000 soldiers and policemen will be deployed to guard the Olympics which is twice as many as were present at London 2012 and the largest ever assembled in Brazils history.

Following reports of doping at the 2012 and Sochi Winter Olympics, 37 Russian athletes have been banned from competing at the Games.

Rio has a sewage problem as it only treats a small percentage of its water before it hits the ocean. Athletes who have fallen in say the water stinks. Coaches are advising sailors to keep their mouths closed or to wash their hands after they touch wet gear.

Sambadrome is a purpose-built parade area in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where samba schools parade competitively each year during the Rio Carnival.

Sugar Loaf Mountain

Situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sugar Loaf Mountain lies at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. Rising 396 meters (1,299 ft) above the harbor, its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar.

Street art

In March 2009, the Brazilian government passed a law making street art and graffiti legal if done with the consent of building owners. It now exists in all corners of the city, from the favelas to upper class neighborhoods, from residential to institutional. It is bold in scale and aesthetics and is anything but graffiti.

$6billion in debt

The state is running a $6 billion deficit. These Olympics will cost it $4.6 billion, overrunning the projected budget by 51%.
